Baltimore Orioles infielder Freddy Galvis, who spent the first six seasons of his career with Philadelphia, returned to the Phillies on Friday in a deal before the Major League Baseball trade deadline.
Philadelphia received Galvis and cash considerations from Baltimore in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Tyler Burch.
Galvis, who is currently on the 10-day injured list with a right quad strain, was batting .249 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs in 72 games for the Orioles.
The 31-year-old is in his 10th major league season. With the Phillies from 2012 to 2017, Galvis batted .245 with 52 home runs and became their starting shortstop.
Galvis has also played for the San Diego Padres (2018), Toronto Blue Jays (2019) and Cincinnati Reds (2019-20).
The Phillies are competing with the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves for the National League East crown. Earlier Friday, they acquired starting pitcher Kyle Gibson and relief pitcher Ian Kennedy from the Texas Rangers.
Burch, 23, has yet to make his debut in the majors. Splitting 2021 so far between Low-A Clearwater and High-A Jersey Shore, Burch has pitched in 23 games, going 4-3 with a 3.99 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings.
