Reds first baseman Joey Votto suffered a fractured left thumb on Wednesday after being hit by a pitch by Chicago White Sox left-hander Dallas Keuchel in the bottom of the fourth inning of Cincinnati's 1-0 home victory.
The 2010 NL MVP and six-time All-Star will miss "weeks" because of the injury, according to Reds manager David Bell.
The 37-year-old Votto, who went 0-for-1 at the plate Wednesday, stayed in the game until he was replaced by Kyle Farmer at first base to begin the sixth inning. A second-round pick by Cincinnati in the 2002 MLB Draft, Votto is hitting .226 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in 29 games this season.
Votto, who made his debut with Reds in 2007, has hit .303 with 300 home runs and 983 RBIs in 1,800 career games with Cincinnati.
Cincinnati also scratched outfielder Nick Castellanos from Wednesday's lineup due to back tightness.
