SAN FRANCISCO, CA: Small earthquakes reaching magnitude 3.7 were felt along California's Central Coast after midnight on Sunday, according to officials.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported four earthquakes 12 miles south-southeast of Lopez Point. They struck between midnight and 6 a.m.
Officials pinpointed the location of the quake at the offshore San Simeon fault, which makes up the larger San Andreas fault system.
Only a handful of residents reported feeling the earthquake and no injures were reported.
"This is a really good reminder that we live in earthquake country and earthquakes are always occurring around here," said USGS seismologist Annemarie Baltay, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
The earthquakes occurred in the area near Big Sur where Highway 1 is being rebuilt after washing away in January. Officials said the work will continue, as scheduled.
The smaller earthquakes have occurred within weeks of larger quakes reported recently in California, including in the Bay Area.
"We do expect there's a two-thirds chance that we'll see a large earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area in the next 20 or so years, so we should be prepared for a large earthquake," Baltay said. "Have a plan. Know what you're going to do. Have backup food and water, and talk to your family."
