South African bank notes feature Nelson Mandela

Cincinnati Sun Sunday 12th February, 2012

Nelson Mandela has been honoured in South Africa with his image now stamped onto the national currency.

In his picture, Mandela, a global symbol for freedom is seen to be humble, smiling and looking toward the future.

The Mandela image will be attached to all the denominations of South Africa's rand, which means it will be on the 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 rand notes.

Nelson Mandela was elected the first black president of the country in 1994 after serving 27 years in prison.

He stood against apartheid, which allowed minority white people to rule in the country while disempowering the original inhabitants.
